Discussions over a major reshuffle of the cabinet have intensified ahead of the presidential election. According to party and political sources, the issue is being discussed at various levels within the government and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). However, the government has yet to make any official decision regarding the number of new ministers to be inducted, those who may be dropped, or the ministries that could see changes.
Following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24, the process of electing a new president has begun in accordance with the Constitution. The Election Commission has said that the election will be held within the timeframe prescribed by law. Against this backdrop, the presidential election has triggered fresh political calculations and discussions.
Political sources say the government may seek to bring greater coordination and efficiency to the administration and cabinet after the presidential election. The ongoing electricity and gas shortages, law-and-order situation, slowdown in industry and business, and growing public hardship have emerged as major challenges for the government. Against this backdrop, discussions are reportedly underway within the party about replacing ministers considered less effective and assigning important portfolios to experienced and active leaders.
The country’s energy situation has also become a major concern for the government. A technical problem at a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Maheshkhali has caused a significant shortfall in the national gas supply. The disruption has affected industries, power plants, CNG filling stations and residential consumers.
Industrialists say the recent gas shortage, compounded by prolonged low pressure, has forced many factories to operate below capacity. In some cases, production activities have been disrupted altogether. Alongside the gas shortage, inadequate electricity supply has added further pressure on the industrial sector. In Gazipur and other industrial areas, irregular supplies of electricity and gas have reportedly disrupted production and increased operating costs.
Against this backdrop, a large section of businesspeople and industrial entrepreneurs has called on the government to take immediate steps to resolve the energy crisis. Recently, representatives of the textile industry also met with the prime minister and raised concerns over the gas shortage. The prime minister, according to those familiar with the meeting, assured them that the government would take various initiatives to address the problem.
Meanwhile, discussions over a possible cabinet reshuffle have intensified within the BNP. A senior party source claimed that several experienced and tested BNP leaders have yet to find a place in the cabinet. At the same time, there is reportedly dissatisfaction within different sections of the party over the performance of some members of the current cabinet over the past several months. As a result, the possibility of inducting several new faces into the cabinet to make both the government and the party more dynamic has gained importance.
Among the names being discussed in political and party circles are Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Moin Khan, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Zainul Abdin Farroque. However, none of these names has been officially confirmed. Several names have also been discussed in different media reports in connection with a possible cabinet reshuffle.
For the posts of state ministers, the names of Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, ABM Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho and several others are reportedly being discussed. However, no government decision or official announcement has yet been made regarding their possible appointments.
Party sources further said that discussions are also underway over changes in several key ministries as part of an effort to strengthen the cabinet. The possibility of assigning experienced and capable leaders to important portfolios, particularly the ministries dealing with home affairs, water resources, power and energy, and economic affairs, is reportedly being considered.
There is also discussion within political circles about inducting Ruhul Kabir Rizvi into the cabinet and giving him an important government responsibility alongside a key role within the party, according to a source. However, the BNP has not made any official statement on the matter.
Political analysts believe that the new government is still relatively young. A major cabinet reshuffle at this stage could therefore signal an effort to improve administrative efficiency and strengthen the government’s capacity to address emerging challenges. They also believe that a combination of experienced and younger leaders could bring greater dynamism to the government’s political and administrative activities.
However, political observers caution that a cabinet reshuffle alone will not resolve the country’s ongoing problems. Effective policies and their rapid implementation will be necessary to improve electricity and gas supplies, restore industrial production, attract investment, maintain law and order, and reduce public suffering.
As a result, what kind of changes the government ultimately makes to the cabinet following the presidential election—and how effectively the newly appointed ministers perform—has emerged as one of the most closely watched issues in the country’s political arena.
