On Tuesday, 25 July 2023, gunfire erupted during an operation conducted by officers of the Rapid Action Battalion-09 at the hostel of Jamia Tawakkulia Renga Madrasah. The exchange of gunfire took place between RAB officers and the armed accused, Maulana Fazlur Haque, who was killed in the gunfight. During the same operation, RAB arrested four other madrasah teachers on suspicion that they were collaborators of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Among those arrested were Liton Bepary (45), Md Koyrujjaman (38), Al Amin (41), and Sirajul Islam (49). The incident was confirmed by Major A.K.M Faisal, a Company Commander of RAB-09. According to Major A.K.M Faisal, the operation was carried out following allegations concerning the repeated sexual abuse of a madrasah student by Maulana Fazlur Haque. “We will not tolerate anyone who misuses their position to abuse innocent children. We had separately received information that the four arrested accused are associated with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and investigation is underway regarding the extent of their political connections,” said Major A.K.M Faisal. Regarding this matter, Abdur Rob, the Vice President of South Surma Upazilla Awami League, stated, “I would like to thank Nurul Muttakin Ohi from Lalabazar and his brother-in-law, Mohammad Abul Hasan from Bishwanath, for bringing the heinous abuse of the madrasa student to the attention of the authorities. Thanks to them, the victim will receive the proper justice.” Badrul Islam, Secretary of South Surma Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami and head of the madrasah committee of Jamia Tawakkulia Renga Madrasah, was not available for comment.
