Questions have once again been raised over the use of public funds in the health sector following allegations of irregularities and corruption surrounding hospital construction, procurement of expensive medical equipment, and various development projects. Although increased budgetary allocations are intended to expand healthcare services and improve access for ordinary citizens, critics allege that a powerful syndicate has become active again, seeking to exploit the large flow of public funds through government procurement and development projects.
According to the allegations, pressure is being exerted within the ministry to favour certain companies in the construction of new facilities and the procurement of high-value medical equipment. In particular, allegations have surfaced over the procurement of dialysis machines for the National Kidney Hospital, with claims that efforts are being made to favour a specific company. There are also allegations that hospital director Dr. Rashed Anwar has come under pressure in connection with the procurement process.
However, the allegations have not yet been independently verified, and no conclusive evidence has been made public. Therefore, the claims require further investigation and verification.
Meanwhile, allegations have also emerged that an individual named Mithu, who was previously accused of corruption in the health sector, has become active again. According to the allegations, a group linked to him is attempting to influence government procurement processes. However, the claims remain allegations at this stage, and the accused parties should be given an opportunity to present their positions before any conclusions are drawn.
Another allegation concerns a meeting involving EDCL Managing Director Ashrafuzzaman. According to the claims, he was summoned to Health Minister Sakhawat Hossain Bakul’s residence last Thursday night, where he was allegedly pressured to implement a decision related to government procurement. The incident has not been independently verified, nor have official statements from the individuals concerned been made public.
The allegations surrounding the health sector are particularly concerning because any misuse of public funds can have a direct impact on healthcare delivery. The procurement of substandard medical equipment can result in equipment becoming unusable within a short period, leaving patients without essential services. Shortages of medicines and medical supplies can also disproportionately affect poor and low-income patients.
Questions have also been raised over the implementation of a government commitment to provide free health cards. Critics allege that greater emphasis is being placed on projects, new buildings and equipment procurement rather than ensuring basic healthcare services for the public.
To ensure greater transparency and accountability in the health sector, stakeholders have called for scrutiny of government procurement procedures, tender processes, evaluation reports, supplier qualifications and the quality of medical equipment being purchased.
They have also urged the authorities to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations and take legal action against anyone found responsible for irregularities or corruption.
Given that the health sector is funded largely through taxpayers’ money, allegations of corruption and irregularities cannot be ignored. If the allegations are substantiated, those responsible should be held accountable. Conversely, if the allegations are found to be baseless, the accused parties should be given an opportunity to clarify their positions.
A transparent and impartial investigation is therefore essential to establish the facts and restore public confidence in the country’s healthcare system.
